After looking into it again, it seems the problem is the latest Nvidia Update.

3.6, 3.8 and 3.10 all work fine with the HD 5500 GPU.

3.6, 3.8 and 3.10 all crash with the NV820M GPU.

Definitely an Nvidia problem.

The NV 820 M began crashing the T3D app right after the update yesterday.

Definitely an Nvidia problem.
What version of the NV driver do you have? Is it with both DIrect3D11 and OpenGL or only one of them?

It's the Nvidia driver update 384.94 (07/24/2017).

D3D 11, D3D 9 and OpenGL used to show up in the game options when I ran T3D with the 820M.

It definitely works with 384.94 i am running that here. Does the graphics properties in windows allow you to select which gpu to run for the individual application? perhaps NV has changed something there. I am running a dual setup myself with an onboard Intel HD 530 and an NV 10 series but it's a desktop so the switching tech is different. I did develop the Direct3D11 gfx device a lot on my laptop but it is a switchable AMD/Intel so i can't replicate your exact config here.

Ok I've fixed the graphics panel crashing and now I am selecting NV 820 to run as the default GPU fot T3D 3.8 and 3.10.

ok. There is actually a way c++ engine side to force those mobile NV optimus GPU's to be enabled, if worse comes to worse i will send a modified version of T3D with that enabled for you to test. You should be able to do the same in the nvidia control panel though

Can i see your log file for version 3.10 when you launch just to the menu with whatever API's are reported (im guessing opengl and direct3d9 from your post above). Don't worry about 3.8, just 3.10

Back to crashing again.

It seems the settings are unstable, so 3.10 has now began crashing for no reason :-(
