Torque 3D 3.7 release candidate

We're learning from our mistakes, and this time we've decided to have a pre-release for everyone to try to break, before we officially release version 3.7. Of course, there will be some issues present, especially with our Linux and OpenGL support. These features are both currently considered beta - not fully production ready, but getting there! Some of these issues we will endeavor to fix before 3.7, others we will leave as known issues in 3.8.


So, what is it we'd like you to do? On a basic level, it'd be great if you could pop over to our downloads page and grab the release candidate. Make a project, run it, see if things work okay in your system! If you're feeling adventurous, you could even try our new OpenGL rendering backend.


We're really happy to be able to say that with 3.7, official support for Linux is back on the table! Bear in mind that as I said above, we consider this a beta feature, so there will definitely be some issues. We'd love to hear about them, as increasing support and stability is a top goal for 3.8.


Now, we'll follow this up with an official release blog for 3.7 when we actually make the release, after you've all had a little while to poke at the candidate. But till then, here's a quick list of some of the most exciting things you'll find in the new version:

 

  • Linux and OpenGL, obviously!
  • Ribbons!
  • A navmesh editor!
  • Sahara accumulation volumes!
  • PhysX 3!
  • Faster TorqueScript, and anonymous functions!

It builds! It runs! However, there is no sound on Debian Wheezy. During startup, I see this in the console:

I hear a brief crackle as this scrolls by, but when playing the demo maps, there is no sound at all. The only other issue I had is that the "rt" system runtime library was not being linked by default, so I was getting undefined references to clock_gettime(). Also, if you go fullscreen at a resolution other than the desktop's, it messes up your desktop on exit, but those are minor issues compared to the sound problem.

After renaming the main.cs most things seem okay after a cursory play around with it.


Only thing which seems a bit odd is this:

tools/gui/guiPlatformGenericMenubar.ed.gui (0): Unable to instantiate non-conobject class GuiPlatformGenericMenuBar.

 

However there are 11040

Warning: NaN encountered while setting an attribute or value
which is rather a lot! :lol:

Also noticed that textures for objects get a funny warning I don't remember seeing in other versions. Materials still load but noticed the console spam.

Warning: Fixup invalid URI in Turret_D_psd: "file://Turret_D.psd"

Probably nothing to worry about.

Zoom/blur shader gives console spam but that's nothing new.

OpenAL seems fine, think that I'm running installer 2.0.7.0 and dll 6.14.357.24 in system32.

Yeah, that thing pretty much only breaks when a new icon gets added to it. I ran into it once myself. Easy to fix, but it can be a bit finnicky if you don't pay attention to it.


Honestly, it should probably be retooled to not be so spazzy when it changes :P

@Nils that code doesn't exist in 3.7. The toolbar now actually sizes itself to the number of icons present, though now apparently it wants to not expand after being collapsed.

Have to confess I didn't had the time yet to look into the code.

Good change! Hope you find that bug (or remove that collapse button :mrgreen: )

The dedicated server crash may or may not be related to the new terrain map storage mechanisms. Did find time enough to touch that up a bit with https://github.com/GarageGames/Torque3D/pull/1270 to get that back to being able to 'aftermarket' the generated terrain textures.

With my old computer Project Manager 2.2 doesn't work. It's because the new VisualStudio suits (2012-2013) from where it is compiled(PM2.2 asks for MSVCR110.dll to work and that file is from those -adding that dll thows an error with FlsGetValue in Kernell32-) don't go very well with WindowsXP.

But, well, WindowsXP isn't supported anymore so I won't cry much over it.

And if it isn't a WindowsXP issue then it's a problem with the old graphics card and the newest qt.


I just grabbed the source of PM2.2 from https://github.com/GarageGames/Torque3D-ProjectManager/releases/tag/v2.2-beta and compiled it myself with VS 2010 Express and the old qt 4.8.2 (I wasn't able to make it work with the newest qt5, probably because I did something wrong).

I had to make a few changes in the code to compile correctly. Let me point them here for if anybody wants to do it themselves:

Changed

By the way, the README.md of that ProjectManager2.2 says to use qt 4.8.2 (that's why I've used it). But I suspect that's a mistake as the .dll provided are for qt5.





Well, after that workaround I haven't found any issues with the engine.

If anything, for me at least, audio goes

$pref::SFX::device = "SFX Null Device";

as default from a new project unlike the 3.6 version that starts with a working audio channel.

As personal opinion I'd rather the default audio to throw sound without having to change the game options first. But that's kind of a small issue as it's easy to change it manually.

@irei1as thanks for all that - I could have sworn I compiled the PM with XP compatibility mode! I'll update the readme so at least it correctly states we're using Qt5 now. I'm not a Qt user so I may have done something strange during the update process. Either way, I think the PM is going to change from its current form ASAP so I'm not incredibly concerned just yet.


Update on the dedicated server crashes: updated the issue with new findings that hopefully @MangoFusion will be able to shed some light on.

installed following the instructions from the wiki on Ubuntu MATE 14.04 with nvidia 346.22 driver from ppa last night, after some fumbling around with a libGL linker error which i couldnt fix and i put down to my GFX driver being configured wrong, i reinstalled Ubuntu MATE and my GFX driver from the correct source then followed torque wiki and it worked perfectly !


i get a few errors when trying to close the program or change from editor to play mode, where would useful information be stored so i can post a log ? here is my console.log when it happens, its the only file iv noticed so far which could help

i have a pretty good pc (8-core i7/16GB RAM/4GB GTX970) and can follow instructions, so if i can help test anything let me know

It builds! It runs! However, there is no sound on Debian Wheezy. During startup, I see this in the console:

i also get no sound through either openal/null, ubuntu 14.04


one other thing i have noticed is when i try typing into anything (naming things/etc) if any of the keys i need to type are pre-set shortcuts for something then you cant always type that letter because it does whatever the shortcut is, i have noticed u and g being problematic so far
